Platelets:
- Stored at room temperature, hence greater infection risk
Indications:
- Platelet count:
- < 10 and not immune thrombocytopenia
- < 20 for procedures without major blood loss (e.g. central line)
- < 30 for on anticoagulant that cannot be stopped
- < 50 for ITP with major bleeding, neuraxial procedure or major surgery
- < 100 for neurosurgery or known head trauma
- Especially valuable for post-operative bleeding.
