Pharmacology - Overview:

Anesthesiologists use various pharmacological agents to maintain patient homeostasis and create optimal conditions for operative success. Proper use of such agents therefore requires that anesthesiologists not only understand the conditions necessary for facilitating the operation, but also the anticipated effect of each agent with attention to the patient’s unique physiology. This chapter will summarize the indications, mechanisms of action, dosing, and important considerations for commonly used anesthetic agents, as well as the divisions of the nervous system on which they act.
